Well what a season for the Wahine of Wesley College it has been. The journey thus far has seen the First XV Girls successfully defend the Counties Manukau First XV Girls competition. We saw a new group of year 9’s and 10’s join the squad and develop a hunger and passion for the game. There were moments of share individual brilliance and strong team play. This year also saw a repeat of last year’s final with a challenge against Manurewa. The growth of players in 2018 to this year has been huge and we have seen the growth in leadership and the impact of teamwork, goals and training can have on the team on and off the field.
The journey and legacy these young women have continued and started at Wesley College is one to be proud of and we must uphold and celebrate. These strong, talented, happy athletes set out to be the best, set the standard and continued to smash it week in and week out. We would like to thank all those who have supported and contributed to this journey and continue to do so. The journey continues at a representative level with the following girls already representing Counties Manukau at U16 level; Mia Lataimaumi, Margaret Lolohea-Saiti, Valu Mafi and Mele Tu’ifua. The team are now going through the selection process for Counties U18 with all members of the management at Wesley College taking this team in 2019. We have one more grand final in the City vs Country series next Wednesday and the team are looking forward to getting out on the paddock again.
We didn’t get the result last night in what was a brilliant game of rugby with players all over the park stepping up, working together and giving it their all for the full 80 minutes. We carried a squad of 17 yesterday and the girls held their own with breaking the line, monstering through in their scrums and challenging right until the last whistle. Thank you to all staff who came out to watch and cheer on the Wesley College First XV girls team and the students who ran the lines, chanted and have watched all season. To finish the 15’s season as Counties Champs, Top team in Counties and have several girls reach representative honours at U16, U18 and Counties Country team.
Our prayers and well wishes to Valu Mafi who sustained an injury yesterday and is now awaiting surgery. We wish her all the best in her recovery and as a team will rally around her to support in any way possible.
