Principal's Message
As the first term of this school year marches towards the end of term, I want to take a moment to reflect on the wonderful tone around our school, the hard work, and growth we’ve experienced as a school community.
Academic Achievement
Our students have shown incredible dedication to their studies. It’s been amazing to see our students grow and excel in the classroom. Special thanks to our teachers for creating engaging and supportive learning environments that help students succeed.
Our 2024 NCEA results will be finalised this week. What I can tell you already, is that they are fantastic results, extremely high levels of achievement that set us by and large above national averages. There will be a detailed report to come in due course.
Community Involvement
This term, we’ve also seen strong participation in school-wide events, including polyfest groups, orienteering, sports practices, which truly show the spirit of our school community. Thank you to all who have volunteered their time, and to our students for showing kindness and leadership in their actions.
Safeguarding
Our Safeguarding programme continues to grow and is now becoming embedded and part of our school culture.
One very noticeable aspect is the change from a hierarchical, power-based student leadership role to a more collaborative, inclusive style in our school setting. This can be a powerful transformation for teenage school leaders. It encourages teamwork, respect, and shared decision-making, which can create a more positive and supportive environment for both leaders and their peers.
In making these changes, our student leaders are moving away from traditional power dynamics and towards a more effective style of leadership that benefits everyone involved. We can all be incredibly proud of our student leaders and seniors in general.
Fiafia night
This year our Fiafia night is being held at a venue outside of school. This is simply because the event has become so popular te whare Angitu (Rec Centre) is just too small to accommodate everyone. Again, this is a great reflection of the support our community shows for our students and school events.
Demolition/Renovation around Denton
The Trust Board has decided to demolish Denton Hostel. While this puts pressure on boarding numbers, it also means long awaited work on developing other dorms and areas around the school can get underway.
One of the first significant areas to be developed will be a student focused project that will provide covered sitting, outdoor dining, play areas, an outdoor stage and an amphitheater. Many of our current students had input into the planning of this space. The photo below gives an idea of the scope; however, it doesn’t really do justice to how good the area will look.
Looking Ahead
As we move into the second term, we’re excited about the many opportunities that lie ahead. We have exciting projects, events, and initiatives planned, and I look forward to seeing our students continue to grow and succeed.
